"The macros in the project are disabled" error message when you run a macro in Visio 2002 (297136)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a drawing that contains macros, you may not be prompted with the choice to "Enable or Disable Macros."

Also, when you try to run a macro, you receive the following message:

The macros in the project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application determine how to enable macros.

CAUSE

The macro security level has been set to High.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, close the drawing and change the macro security level to Medium. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, point to Macros, and then click Security.
  2. On the Security Level tab, click Medium, and then click OK.
Visio now prompts you to enable or disable macros when you reopen the drawing.
