Error Message Occurs When You Install SharePoint Portal Server on a Cluster Server (297118)

SYMPTOMS

If you install SharePoint Portal Server on a node of a Microsoft Windows 2000 cluster server, Setup fails, and you receive the following error message:
A problem has been encountered in the Microsoft Embedded Exchange Core setup component. Canceling Setup.

The following data is logged in the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file:

The next lines in the Setup log may reference "Leaving CBaseExchangeComponent::ScPostSetup."

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. You cannot install SharePoint Portal Server in a clustered environment, and you must not join the server to a clustered environment.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install SharePoint Portal Server on a non-clustered Windows 2000 Server computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
