XADM: Run Forestprep on Domain Controller Before Installing Exchange Member Server from BackOffice (297096)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q297096

SYMPTOMS

When you install Exchange 2000 from BackOffice 2000, you cannot install Exchange 2000 on a member server until you first run forestprep on the domain controller. The Exchange Server Setup will fail with error code 0xC007054:
[15:58:48] szLookupServer = '(null)', m_strName = 'Administrator', m_strDomain = 'BOSERVER28' CTrustee::ScLookupSid (C:\SOURCE\PTSP\ADMIN\src\libs\logic\security2.cxx:880) Error code 0XC007054B (1355): The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
At this point, Exchange 2000 Setup is trying to contact a server instead of the domain.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because during the first phase of the BackOffice Setup, a local administrator account is logged on to the member server. When Exchange 2000 starts installing, it passes the local administrator account value instead of the domain account that is needed for the installation.

RESOLUTION

Run Exchange Server Setup with the /forestprep command line switch before you install Exchange 2000 on a member server from BackOffice 2000.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Setup with the /forestprep command line switch is required to extend the Active Directory schema to include Exchange 2000-specific information.
