OL98: Error Message: OLE Registration Error Occurred. The Program Is Not Correctly Installed (296943)

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


To resolve this behavior, remove Outlook 98, rename certain files, delete the Active Setup registry value, and then reinstall Outlook 98:

1. Click Start on the taskbar, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Outlook 98 on the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Add/Remove.
3. Click Remove Outlook 98, and then click Yes.
4. After the removal process is complete, click Yes to restart Windows 95.
5. After your computer restarts, click Start on the taskbar, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
6. In the Named box, type outl*.dll, click drive C: under Look in, click to select the Include Subfolders check box, and then click Find Now.
7. For each file in the search results box, select the file, click Rename on the File menu, and change the file extension from .dll to .old.
8. Repeat the same renaming process for the Outcmd.dat and Extend.dat files.
9. Repeat the searching and renaming process for Outl*.exe and Outl.*.ini files but use .bad and .bac respectively as the new file extension.
10. Click Start, point to Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
11. In Registry Editor, locate the Active Setup value under the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\

12. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type Active Setup, and then click Save.
13. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
14. Quit Registry Editor.
15. Reinstall Outlook.
