SYMPTOMS

When you use Mobile Information Server to send a push notification to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) carrier, if the Mobile Information Server computer is set up with a network adaptor on the public Internet and a network adaptor on the private intranet, messages may not be delivered, and you may receive the following non-delivery report (NDR):
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

123456789@smtpcarrier.com on 1/01/2001 1:11 PM
The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.

You may be able to use Telnet to manually connect to the destination SMTP server; however, the Microsoft Windows 2000 SMTP service may fail. Mobile Information Server uses the Windows 2000 SMTP service to send messages to an SMTP carrier.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the network adapter that is located on the intranet is bound before the network adapter on the Internet. In this case, the name resolution service fails for the SMTP service as the service tries to resolve an Internet domain name on the intranet DNS server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, perform the following steps:
  1. Open Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dialup connections.
  2. On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings.
  3. Click the Adapters and Bindings tab, and then verify that the network adapter that is connected to the public Internet is higher in the binding order than the network adapter that is located on the private intranet.
  4. Click OK.
