FP: Server Error 160002 When You Attempt to Connect to SMTP Host (296697)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to submit a form that contains an e-mail address, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
FrontPage Error.

User: please report details to this site's webmaster.

Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.
On the Microsoft Windows NT Server computer, the following event appears when you view the Application Log in Event Viewer:

FRONTPAGE 3.0       1000
					

When you open this event, an event description similar to the following appears

Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
160002 Could not connect to SMTP server server name

-or-

Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
160002 Could not connect to SMTP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

and you are unable to configure your form to communicate with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You use the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service to forward e-mail to an Exchange Server computer.

    -and-
  • The Internet Mail Service (IMS) on the Exchange Server computer is not installed or started.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start IMS. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: If IMS is not installed on the computer, start Microsoft Exchange Administrator. On the File menu, point to New Other, and then click Internet Mail Service. Follow the steps of the Internet Mail Wizard to install and configure IMS.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Services.
  3. In the Service list, click Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, and then click Start.
