FP98: Error Message When You Upgrade or Install Server Extensions: INI File "" Section "Port 80" Not Found (296696)

SYMPTOMS

If you upgrade or install the FrontPage Server Extensions from Microsoft by using FrontPage Server Administrator, you may receive a Server Administrator error message similar to the following:
INI file "" section "Port 80" not found
When you view the Application Log in Event Viewer, the following error is listed:
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
0x8007003
20018 ini section port80 not found

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • The FrontPage Server Extensions installation is damaged.

    -or-
  • The permission settings do not allow access to Port 80 information by the FrontPage initialization file (Frontpg.ini).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, completely remove and then reinstall the FrontPage Server Extensions. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the server computer by using the local Administrator account.
  2. Start FrontPage Server Administrator.
  3. In the Select server or port list, click the server that you want, and then click Uninstall.
  4. On the Server Administrator message that appears, click OK.
  5. On the Uninstall completed successfully message, click OK, and then click Close.
  6. Start Internet Service Manager.
  7. Expand Internet Information Server.
  8. Right-click *server name (where server name is the name of the Web server), and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
  9. On the Home Directory tab, click to clear the FrontPage Web check box under Content Control, click Apply, and then click OK twice.
  10. Start a command prompt.
  11. Type cd\Winnt (where Winnt is the folder in which Microsoft Windows is installed), and then press ENTER.
  12. Type Edit Frontpg.ini, and then press ENTER.

    The FrontPage initialization file opens in Windows Editor.
  13. Delete any lines that appear in the [Ports] section.

    NOTE: Do not delete information in the other sections of the file.
  14. On the File menu, click Save.
  15. On the File menu, click Exit.
  16. Quit the command prompt.
  17. Install the FrontPage Server Extensions.
