FP98: Error Message: Server Error : Bad Web Config Line "Vti_encoding: SR | UTF8" (296661)

Extensions on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based server computer that is
configured with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0, you may
receive the following error message: Server Error: Bad
web config line: "vti_encoding: SR|UTF8" CAUSE This issue can occur because of file corruption in the
folder in which the Web content is stored. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, follow these steps. Uninstall the FrontPage Server Extensions Remove FrontPage Server Extensions from the Web site. To do this,
follow these steps:
- Start FrontPage Server Administrator.
- In the Select server or port list, click
the virtual server that you want.
- Click Uninstall, and then click OK to confirm the removal of the FrontPage Server
Extensions.
- When you receive a message stating that "Uninstall
completed successfully," click OK.
- Click Close.
Create a New Web Content Folder Create a new folder in which to store the Web content. To do
this, follow these steps:
- Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the drive that
you want.
- On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
- In the New Folder name box, type the name that you want (for example,
InetPub2), and then press ENTER.
- In the All Folders list, click the new folder that you created. On the File menu, point to New, and then click New Folder.
- Type the name that you want for this new Web content folder
(for example, Web Content2), and then press
ENTER.
NOTE: For the highest level of security, it is recommended that you
have a buffer folder between the root of the hard disk and the folder that
contains the Web content. In this example, the InetPub2 folder is between the
root of the hard disk and the Web Content2 folder. - Quit Windows Explorer.
Map the Web Site to the New Content Folder Direct the virtual server to the new content folder that you
created. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Internet Service Manager.
- In the Console Root, expand Internet Information Server.
- Expand *Server, where Server is the name of the Web
server computer.
- Right-click the Web site that you want, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
- Click the Home Directory tab, and then click Browse.
- Browse to the location of the new Web content folder that
you created (for example, drive:\InetPub2\Web Content2), and then click OK.
- Click OK.
- Quit the IIS Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
Restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service To stop and restart the World Wide Web Publishing Service, follow
these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Services.
- Click World Wide Web Publishing Service,
and then click Stop.
- Click Yes to confirm stopping the service.
- When the service is stopped (Started is no longer displayed in the Status list), click Start.
- Click Close, and then quit Control Panel.
Reinstall the FrontPage Server Extensions Reinstall the FrontPage Server Extensions on the virtual server
(Web site). To do this, follow these steps:
- Start FrontPage Server Administrator.
- Click Install.
- In the Server type list, click
Microsoft Internet Information Server, and then click OK.
- Click the virtual server that you want, and then click OK.
- Confirm the selections that you have made, and then click OK.
- In the Name box, type the name that you use to administer the FrontPage Webs
(for example, Administrator), and then click OK.
- When you receive a message stating that "Install completed
successfully," click OK.
- Click Close.
Move the Web Content to the New Folder Use Windows Explorer to copy the content from the old Web content
folder to the new Web content folder that you created. To do this, follow these
steps:
- Start Windows Explorer.
- On the View menu, click Options.
- Click Show all files, click to clear the
Hide file extensions for known file types check box, and then
click OK.
- Navigate to the folder that contains the Web content that
you want to move.
- On the Edit menu, click Select All.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Navigate to the new Web content folder that you
created.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- Each time that you are prompted to confirm replacement of
the folder, click No.
- Each time that you are prompted to confirm replacement of
the file, click No.
- Quit Windows Explorer.
