SYMPTOMS

When you import a configuration file that you created on another Windows 2000 DHCP server, the import does not succeed and you receive the following error message:
Option 81 conflicts with an existing option

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you create the server export file on a Windows 2000 DHCP server that you configured to perform dynamic Domain Name System (DNS) updates on behalf of DHCP clients.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, configure the import DHCP server to have the same dynamic DNS settings as the server on which you created the export file. To verify that the configurations are the same on the DHCP server that you are using to export the scopes and the server that is importing the scopes:
  1. In Microsoft Management Console (MMC), open DHCP Server.
  2. Right-click the server, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the DNS tab to view the configuration. Each setting must be the same on both DHCP servers.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
