FP2000: Web Elements Do Not Work After the Web Is Published (296589)

SYMPTOMS

When you view your Microsoft FrontPage Web after you publish it to an Internet service provider (ISP) or a Web Presence Provider (WPP), some forms, themes, and other Web elements may not function correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because some features of FrontPage Web components are displayed and work correctly only when the Web pages containing them are accessed through a Web server, rather than through a file server or your local computer. If you develop your Web site by using a disk-based Web, you may not be able to confirm that the Web elements function correctly unless you test the components by publishing your disk-based Web to a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, publish your Web to either Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS), Microsoft Peer Web Services, or Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). You can then use this as a staging platform to preview your site and ensure that all Web elements function correctly before you upload to your ISP or WPP. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Web server appropriate for your operating system:

    • Microsoft Personal Web Server for Microsoft Windows 95
    • Microsoft Personal Web Server for Microsoft Windows 98
    • Microsoft Peer Web Services or Microsoft Internet Information Server for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
    • Microsoft Internet Information Services for Microsoft Windows 2000

    Personal Web Server and Peer Web Services are included in the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack and are available for download at the following Microsoft Web site:

    If you are running Windows 98, select the Windows NT Option Pack Download Wizard for Windows 95 option.
  2. Install Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions. FrontPage Server Extensions are available for download from the following Microsoft Web site:

  3. Start FrontPage, and then open your Web.
  4. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  5. In the Specify the location to publish your Web to box, type the path to your Web server. For example, type http://local computer name/MyPersonalWeb, and then click Publish.
  6. To view your site in your Web browser, click the hyperlink that is displayed after your Web is published.
  7. Navigate through your site to ensure that all Web components are displayed and function correctly.
  8. Open your Web in FrontPage and make any necessary changes.
  9. If necessary, repeat steps 4 through 8.
  10. When you are ready to publish your Web to the World Wide Web, click Publish Web on the File menu, and then type the location provided to you by your ISP or WPP in the Specify the location to publish your Web to box. For example, type http://www.isp name.com/~folder/.
