You cannot move Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes by using Active Directory Users and Computers (296522)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario.

A Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5-based computer is running in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory domain.
The Exchange Server 5.5 directory is linked with the Active Directory Connector (ADC).
You ran Microsoft Exchange 2000 Setup with the forestprep option.

In this scenario, the following symptoms may occur:

You cannot move mailboxes successfully. And, you receive an "Invalid ADSI pathname" error message.
Many users are missing the homeMDB attribute, the homeMTA attribute, or both.
The following events are logged in the Application log:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSADC
Event Category: Replication
Event ID: 8294
Description: The homeMDB attribute is not present on the import object CN=DN. This can happen when ADC does not have permissions to see all links. Please ensure that the ADC has Read permissions to the all of the source directory, including the Microsoft Exchange Configuration Container. (Connection Agreement 'CA Name' #1812)

CAUSE

Cause 1

When you run the Exchange 2000 setup /forestprep command, the Enterprise information is imported into Active Directory. If you add or remove several servers into the environment after you run forestprep, the information in Active Directory may be out of date. When Active Directory Users and Computers and the ADC try to reference this outdated information, the symptoms that are listed in the "Symptoms" section occur.

Cause 2

The account that is responsible for replicating the information between Active Directory and Exchange Server 5.5 does not have the appropriate permissions. This account is listed on the Connections tab of the Recipient Connection agreement. This account must have permissions in the root domain.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following resolutions as appropriate.

Resolution 1

Add an Exchange 2000 server into the environment. When you do this, the Site Replication Service and a Configuration Connection Agreement are installed. This updates the information in Active Directory.

Resolution 2

On the Connections tab of the Recipient Connection Agreement, change the account to the account that was used to install the ADC. Or, use another account that has Enterprise Admin permissions.
Restart the Microsoft Active Directory Connector service. To do this, follow these steps:
1. On the computer that has the ADC installed, click Start, click Run, type Services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Right-click Microsoft Active Directory Connector Service, and then click Restart.
Use Active Directory Users and Computers to modify an attribute on a test user, such as add a telephone number.
Replicate the Recipient Connection Agreement attribute, the homeMDB attribute, and the HomeMTA attribute to Exchange Server 5.5.
