CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Anonymous access functionality is disabled on the MMISNotify virtual directory in Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) on the Mobile Information Server computer. By default, Anonymous and Integrated Windows authentication is enabled.

RESOLUTION

To enable Anonymous access on the MMISNotify virtual directory:
  1. On the Mobile Information Server computer, click Start, click Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. Click to expand your server, and then click to expand Default Web Site.
  3. Right-click MMISNotify virtual directory, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab, and then click Edit in the Anonymous Access and Authentication Control section.
  5. Confirm that the Anonymous Access check box has been selected, click OK, click Apply, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Message Processor uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to submit the incoming messages that are to be processed even if the message comes in by using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol from the Exchange Event Source. This message is passed through the Dmiflt.dll Internet Server Application Programming Interface (ISAPI) filter though the MMISNotify virtual directory. The HTTP 401 error that is indicated in the Event ID 268 message is the "HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized" error message because the DMI/MP uses Anonymous HTTP PUT commands internally.
