Serial Mouse Does Not Work After You Resume from Standby or Hibernation (296212)

SYMPTOMS

After you resume from hibernation, suspend, or standby, your serial mouse may no longer work.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because devices that are connected to the serial port are not re-enumerated after your computer returns from an S3 (Standby) or S4 (Hibernate) state.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods:

Restart Your Computer

  1. Press CTRL+ESC, and then press U.
  2. If needed, press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW key to select Restart, and then press ENTER.

Run the Add New Hardware Wizard

  1. Press CTRL+ESC, press S, and then press C to open Control Panel.
  2. If needed, press any of the ARROW keys to select Add New Hardware, and then press ENTER.
  3. Press ENTER, press ENTER, and then wait until your mouse is detected.
  4. After your mouse becomes functional, click Cancel to stop the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard.

Configure Your Computer to Not Use Deepsleep

NOTE: The following procedure may adversely affect battery life on portable computers.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click Advanced, click to clear the Enable DeepSleep check box, click OK, and then click OK.

Configure Your Computer to Not Use Hibernation

NOTE: The following procedure may adversely affect battery life on portable computers.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
  2. On the Hibernate tab, click to clear the Enable hibernate support check box, and then click OK. Note that if the Hibernate tab does not exist, your computer is not capable of hibernation.

Use a PS/2 Mouse

You can avoid this issue by using a PS/2 mouse instead of a serial mouse.
