SYMPTOMS

The following events may appear in the Application log of a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 agent
Performance counter Directory Pickup Queue Length does not exist on this computer. SMTP Server will be disabled.
Performance instance does not exist on this computer. [x] will be disabled.
where x is a counter. For example, [SQLServer:Replication Dist.::Dist:Delivered Trans/sec].

CAUSE

This problem can occur if MOM 2000 determines that the required performance counter is not installed on the computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

In most cases, the events that are listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article are normal events. The MOM 2000 Performance Provider typically logs these messages only at startup. Unless you have reason to expect these particular counters to be monitored on the computer, you can ignore the messages.
