Small Business Server 2000 is a comprehensive suite of programs that includes the following components:

• Microsoft Shared Fax Service

Small Business Server has been developed to provide a cost-effective suite of programs for small businesses that have less than 50 client computers. To offer discounted pricing to small-business customers, Microsoft has put some limitations on the usage of Small Business Server 2000.

Small Business Server 2000 has the following limitations.

Small Business Server 2000 (general limitations)

• You must install all of the component server programs in the Small Business Server 2000 suite on a single server. None of the components can be installed on a separate server. If you want to run any of the component services on a server other than the Small Business Server 2000 server, the other server requires separate media and licenses.
• You can connect a maximum of 50 workstations to a Small Business Server 2000 network, which limits the number of workstations that can access any of the component server programs.
• The server is a single-domain solution, which is not intended to be integrated with other Windows domains. You are not permitted to establish explicit trusts to other Microsoft Windows NT nor to Active Directory domains. Also, Small Business Server 2000 does not enable you to create child domains.
• There are 3 Microsoft products that are unique to and only available with the Small Business Server 2000 and BackOffice Server 2000 packages. These products are:
  • Microsoft Connector for Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) Mailboxes (only available with Small Business Server 2000)
  • Microsoft Shared Fax Service
  • Microsoft Shared Modem Service
  The Small Business Server 2000 End-User License Agreement (EULA) prohibits the installation of the preceding components on a server other than the Small Business Server 2000 server.

Windows 2000 Server

You can have other domain controllers and member servers in your Small Business Server network, however, Small Business Server 2000 must be set up as the root domain controller of a Microsoft Active Directory forest. This set up can prevent Small Business Server 2000 from serving as a corporate branch office or a divisional server of a larger organization with an existing Active Directory or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain infrastructure. Small Business Server 2000 cannot be added to an existing domain. You must install the Small Business Server domain first, and then you can add additional domain controllers or member servers to the Small Business Server 2000 domain.

Exchange 2000 Server

Exchange 2000 on a Small Business Server installation is restricted from being part of a larger Exchange server organization. Because Small Business Server 2000 is installed as the root of the Active Directory forest, you cannot install the Exchange 2000 component into an existing organization.

Licensing

• Client Access Licenses (CALs) are managed by means of Client Add Pack diskettes and they must be acquired separately. Also, in Control Panel (in Small Business Server 2000), you cannot use the Windows 2000 License Manager tool.
• Small Business Server 2000 requires a Small Business Server 2000 Client Add Pack to add additional licenses to the server. Small Business Server version 4.0 or version 4.5 Client Add Packs cannot be used to increase the number of licenses on your Small Business Server 2000 server. If you upgrade your Small Business Server 4.5 installation to Small Business Server 2000, the number of licenses are reset to 5 and additional CALs have to be purchased separately.
