SYMPTOMS

In the Component Selection window, when you click Install to install a component of Exchange 2000 Server, you may receive the following error message:
The component "Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging Service" cannot be assigned the action, Install, because a server object for this server (ServerName) already exists in the Administrative group, AdminGroupName. You must either remove this server object before installing, or run Setup with the "DisasterRecovery" switch if you are attempting to recover this server.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the previous installation for this component had not been successful. The computer has retained some information that is related to this component, and the presence of this information prevents the component from being installed.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this behavior, modify the registry values under the following registry to "pretend" that the component has been installed successfully, and then remove this component and install it again:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup

For the example that is described in the Symptoms section of this article:
  1. Add the following registry values under the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup

    Name: InstantMessaging
    Type: REG_SZ
    Data: path for the InstantMessaging

    Name: InstantMessaging Version
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Data: 0x3c
  2. Run Exchange 2000 Setup to remove the Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging component.
  3. Run Exchange 2000 Setup to install the Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging component.
