SYMPTOMS

On a computer that has only 64 MB of random access memory (RAM), when you attempt to convert a 60 GB (or larger) file allocation table (FAT32) partition to an NTFS file system partition, the Autoconvert tool (Autoconvert.exe) generates an "insufficient memory" error message and the conversion does not succeed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Autoconvert tool allocates a bitmap to map the volume. The bitmap is based on the partition size and cluster size. When this behavior occurs, the Autoconvert tool is unable to allocate 13 MB of memory to proceed further.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use any of the following three methods:
  • Increase the amount of memory (RAM) in the computer to 128 MB.
  • In one scenario (64 MB of RAM with a 60 GB hard disk and a FAT32 partition), increase the cluster size to 32 KB. (The hard disk has to be reformatted.)
  • Make the partition size smaller (40 GB).
