Visio2002: Visio 2000 Runs from Start Menu When Visio 2002 Is Expected to Run (295722)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q295722

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Visio from the Start menu, Microsoft Visio 2000 runs instead of Microsoft Visio 2002.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when you do the following steps in order:
  1. You install Microsoft Visio 2002.
  2. You install or repair Microsoft Visio 2000.
The Setup programs for Visio 2000 and Visio 2002 use the same shortcut name. When you install Visio 2000, Setup overwrites the shortcut of the version of Visio that you previously installed (Visio 2002). Microsoft Windows then uses this Start menu shortcut for Visio 2000 to run Visio.

NOTE: The Microsoft Visio shortcut on the Start menu always points to the Visio 2000 or Visio 2002 product that you most recently installed, reinstalled, or repaired.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, run Detect and Repair on Visio 2002, to make it the active version of Visio. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of programs, click Microsoft Visio Standard 2002 or Microsoft Visio Professional 2002.
  4. Click Add/Remove or Change.
  5. Click Repair - Restore to original installation state.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Install.
This procedure restores Visio 2002 to its original installed state, and updates the shortcut in the Start menu. The shortcut for Visio 2000 no longer exists.

MORE INFORMATION

You can also create a new shortcut for Visio 2000 and have both versions on the Start menu at the same time. For additional information about how to do this, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
