This article explains how to reinstall Microsoft FrontPage 98 Server Extensions and Microsoft Personal Web Server (MSPWS), and how to import existing Web content into the new Web.

If your installation of MSPWS becomes corrupted, you may still be able to recover your Web content. You will need to reinstall MSPWS, and then import your existing Web content into the new Web. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. In the Folder Options dialog box, click Show hidden files and folders on the View tab under Advanced settings, click Apply, and then click OK.
  4. In the Folders list, expand WEBSHARE, and then click the folder that contains your Web content. For example, click WWWROOT.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Copy to Folder.
  7. In the Browse For Folder dialog box, type C:\Backup WEB Content in the Folder box, and then click OK.

    Your existing Web content is copied to the newly created folder.
  8. Quit Windows Explorer.
  9. Uninstall Personal Web Server:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Personal Web Server, and then click Add/Remove.
    4. In response to the This will remove Personal Web Server. Do you wish to continue? message that appears, click Yes.
    5. Follow the instructions to remove Personal Web Server.

      NOTE: If you are unable to uninstall Personal Web Server, continue with the following steps.
  10. Install Microsoft Personal Web Server:
    1. Browse the contents of the Microsoft FrontPage 98 compact disc, and then double-click the PWS folder.
    2. Double-click the enu folder.
    3. Double-click pwssetup.exe.
    4. Restart the computer when prompted.
  11. Install FrontPage 98 Server Extensions:
    1. Start Windows Explorer, and then navigate to the following folder:

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage

    2. Double-click the FrontPage Server Administrator shortcut.
    3. In the FrontPage Server Administrator dialog box, click Install.
    4. In the Configure Server Type dialog box, click Microsoft Personal Web Server in the Server type list, and then click OK four times.
    5. Quit FrontPage Server Administrator.
  12. Import Existing Web Content:
    1. Start FrontPage.
    2. In the Getting Started dialog box, click More Webs.
    3. Type Localhost in the Select a Web server or disk location text box, and then click List Webs.
    4. Select Root Web, and then click OK.
    5. In the Contents of http://local host dialog box, delete the following files and folders:

      DEFAULT.HTM
      _private
      cgi-bin
      images

    6. On the File menu, click Import.
    7. In the Import File to FrontPage Web dialog box, click Add File.
    8. Browse to the location of the Web content that you want.
    9. Select all of the Web content (click the first item, press SHIFT, and then click the last item), click Open, and then click OK. If a Confirm Save dialog box appears, click Yes to All.
