SYMPTOMS

Some documents may not be filtered by Site Server Search after you apply Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or Service Pack 4 (SP4).

CAUSE

HREF tags that are contained within script tags are not processed after you apply Site Server 3.0 SP3 or SP4.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Site Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name Platform
   --------------------------------------------------------------
   July 3, 2001 14:26 7.0.1318.0 190,736 Nlhtml.dll Alpha
   July 3, 2001 14:27 7.0.1318.0 102,368 Nlhtml.dll Intel

WORKAROUND

Nlhtml.dll ships in a number of products. Versions of Nlhtml.dll that ship in products other than Site Server will not include this fix. The following steps preserve the use of this version of NLHTML if applying a hotfix, service pack or products that includes a newer version of Nlhtml.dll:
  1. Create a files named Fltrdmn.local in the same directory as fltrdmn.exe. The content of the file does not matter.
  2. The Nlhtml.dll in the same directory as Fltrdmn.exe will be used instead of the one in system32.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

The Site Server HTML filter, Nlhtml.dll, was not originally designed to perform script parsing, so processing HREF tags within SCRIPT tags should not work. However, because of a problem in Nlhtml.dll, versions of Nlhtml.dll in Site Server 3.0 before SP3 would incorrectly filter HREF tags within SCRIPT tags.

A fix was created for the problem that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge base article:

242552 Search: Script Comments Appear in the Document Abstract

The fix that is described in Q242552 prevents the HTML filter from processing HREF tags that are contained within SCRIPT tags because of the problems that are related to doing so.

A registry key is available to enable this old functionality in cases where it is necessary.

IMPORTANT: Results of the following process are not guaranteed to be correct because this is not "by design" functionality and has not been tested.
  1. Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to locate the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Nlhtml

  2. Add the following registry value to this key:

Value name: CustomerControl Data type: REG_SZ Value data: TRUE

  3. Quit Registry Editor.
