XADM: Distribution Lists Replicate to Active Directory as Contacts (295285)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q295285

SYMPTOMS

Distribution lists from Exchange Server 5.5 may replicate over the Active Directory Connector (ADC) to Active Directory as contacts instead of universal distribution groups.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Exchange organizations are different and an interorganizational (between organizations) recipient Connection Agreement is being used to replicate directory information between the Exchange Server 5.5 directory and Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The contacts contain the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol <SMTP> addresses of the distribution lists in the originating Exchange organization; therefore, the distribution lists are still functional as long as the originating Exchange environment exists.

This behavior occurs if the two different Exchange organizations are Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 organizations, and also if the two different Exchange organizations are both Exchange Server 5.5 organizations. This behavior occurs if the Exchange 2000 organization is in either Mixed mode or in Native mode, and if the Windows 2000 forest is in either Mixed mode or Native mode.
