SYMPTOMS

When you convert a Microsoft Access project (.adp) from a Microsoft Access 2002 file format to a Microsoft Access 2000 file format, you may receive the following error, and then Microsoft Access quits:
Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

You have Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 Service Pack 2 or earlier installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade your computer to MDAC 2.6. You can obtain the latest version of MDAC from the following Microsoft Web site:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in MDAC 2.6.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Open the sample project NorthwindCS.adp, and then connect it to a remote SQL Server.
  2. Open several forms, and verify that they work correctly and that they display data.
  3. On the Tools menu, point to Database Utilities, point to Convert Database, and then click To Access 2002 File Format.
  4. Save the file as NwindCS2002.adp.
  5. Open NwindCS2002.adp.
  6. Open several forms, and verify that they work correctly and that they display data.
  7. On the Tools menu, point to Database Utilities, point to Convert Database, and then click To Access 2000 File Format.
  8. Save the file as NwindCS2000.adp.
  9. Note you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
