ACC2002: Unable to Convert an Enabled Workgroup Information File After Adding Users (295253)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Access 2002

This article was previously published under Q295253
Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

This article applies only to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb).

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Access 2002 allows you to enable and add additional users to a Microsoft Access 97 workgroup information file (.mdw). However, you are prevented from converting the file to Access 2000 or 2002 format. In this case, the Convert Database Into dialog box remains open even if you click Save, and no converted file is saved to the hard disk. On the rare occasion that a file is created, the new file is corrupted, and you receive the following error message; then, Microsoft Access quits:
Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

RESOLUTION

Currently there is no workaround for the behavior. If you have a workgroup information file that was created prior to Jet 4.0, Microsoft recommends that you re-create the workgroup information file using Jet 4.0.

For more information about re-creating workgroup information files, click Microsoft Access Help on the Help menu, type Troubleshoot Security in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned. Then select the topic I want to rebuild a workgroup information file from user and group names and IDs.

If business needs prevent you from re-creating the workgroup information file with Jet 4.0, you have the following options when working with the original Jet 3.5 workgroup information file.

  • Convert the .mdw file.
  • Leave the file in the format of the earlier version.
