FIX: Cluster Member's IP Settings Are Lost When You Disconnect Application Center 2000 Cluster Controller from Network (295092)

SYMPTOMS

If you disconnect an Application Center 2000 cluster controller's front-end (load balanced) network adapter (NIC) from the network, the rest of the cluster members may lose the static IP settings on their front-end NICs. This only occurs if you have Media Sense enabled on your cluster controller's front-end NIC.

CAUSE

When Media Sense is enabled on a Network Load Balancing (NLB) adapter and the adapter is in a disconnected state, NLB sets the adapter addresses to 0.0.0.0. Application Center 2000 detects this change and replicates it to the rest of the cluster.

NOTE: Twisted pair adapters report a disconnected state if the link state is dropped for any reason, including failures in the networking equipment at the other end of the cable that is connected to the controller's NIC.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, disable Media Sense on the cluster controller's NIC to prevent the adapter from moving into a disconnected state.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Application Center 2000.

This problem was corrected in Application Center 2000 Service Pack 1.
