FIX : "SET ROWCOUNT" May Cause Data to be Unreadable (295023)

SYMPTOMS

Using an ALTER TABLE statement to alter a column in a table may cause data in that column to become unreadable or to display incorrectly if:
  • A SET ROWCOUNT statement is used prior to the execution of the ALTER TABLE statement.

    -and-

  • The SET ROWCOUNT value is lower than the number of rows in the table.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Do not turn on the SET ROWCOUNT option when you use an ALTER TABLE statement.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs irrespective of the client utility used to connect to SQL Server 2000.
