SYMPTOMS

When you use Regedt32.exe and you connect to a remote computer by clicking Select Computer on the Registry menu, you can open a registry hive on a remote computer. If you then use the Save Key command on the Registry menu to save a registry key from the remote computer's registry hive, Regedt32 saves the key on the remote computer, even if you select a path to save the key on your local computer's hard disk. You may receive the following error message if the path that you select is invalid for the remote computer:
Error
Registry Editor could not accomplish the requested operation.

CAUSE

When you use the Save Key command on the Registry menu to save a registry key, Regedt32 displays a Save Key dialog box in which you can select the path to which to save the registry key as a file. However, when you save a registry key from a remote computer's hive, Regedt32 relates this path to the remote computer and tries to save the key on the remote computer's hard disk.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods:
  • Use a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path name instead of the actual path.
  • Use the Save Subtree As command in Regedt32.exe to save the registry key.
  • Use Regedit.exe to save the registry key to the local computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
