XCCC: Instant Messaging Users Are Automatically Disconnected (294940)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging client program, you may experience the following behaviors:
  • You are disconnected from Exchange Instant Messaging.

    -or-

  • You are disconnected while you are having an instant message conversation with another Exchange Instant Messaging user.

    -or-

  • When you try to log on to Exchange Instant Messaging, you receive the following error message:
    Exchange Instant Messaging authentication failure. The person logged on to this computer does not have permission to use the specified e-mail address. Please supply an e-mail address and logon credentials for that address.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Exchange Instant Messaging server's licensing mode is set to Per Server mode, which means that a limited number of concurrent connections are permitted at a single time. Because Exchange Instant Messaging uses the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 service users may experience the symptoms described in the "Symptoms" section, if the number of concurrent connections is reached.

Description:
No license was available for user UserA using product IIS 5.0.

Additionally, when you perform a Network Monitor trace you may see the Instant Messaging server respond with the following error message:
403 - Access Forbidden
NOTE: In these scenarios, users who have administrative permissions to this server do not have a problem. This is because multiple administrators can connect to the server after the server reaches its maximum connection limit.
