ERROR SIGNATURE

This article addresses a crash problem that can have the following error signatures:

SYMPTOMS

When you click Yes when you are prompted to save a document, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

CAUSE

Word may stop responding if all of the following conditions are true:
  1. You have more than two documents open.
  2. At least two of the documents each include a bulleted list and have a theme applied.
  3. You quit Word by clicking Exit on the File menu.
  4. You click Yes when you are prompted to save each document.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save and close each document separately before you quit Microsoft Word.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
