SYMPTOMS

When you send a Microsoft Word 2002 document as an attachment, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you send multiple files to a mail recipient as attachments, and the file name of the second file that you send is longer than the file name of the first file. The error message appears when you try to send a third file as an attachment.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, send the document with the longer file name before you send the document with the shorter file name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP-2).
