This article was previously published under Q294570

SYMPTOMS

When you open a large number of message windows in Outlook 2001 for Mac, Outlook may stop responding and causes you to force quit or restart your computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reduce the number of open Outlook windows at any given time or allocate more memory to Outlook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Outlook attempts to open as many windows as you request. However, due to memory limitations set when Outlook is started, a large amount of open messages may cause Outlook to run out of available memory. This condition cause the program to stop responding.

NOTE:There is not a precise number of message windows that causes Outlook to stop responding. Varying factors include message content and the amount of memory allocated to Outlook. Allocating more memory to Outlook does not ensure the ability to have more open windows at a given time.

How to Allocate More Memory to Outlook

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Locate the Outlook icon that is in the Outlook 2001 folder.
  3. Click the Outlook icon. Do not open Outlook.
  4. On the File menu, click Get Info, and then click Memory.
  5. In the Preferred Size box, type a number higher than the number that is currently listed in the Suggested Size box.
  6. Close all open windows, and restart Outlook.
The actual amount of allocated memory that you enter in the Preferred Size box depends on the amount of physical memory, as well as Virtual Memory on your computer. If you are unsure as to the setting for the Preferred Size box, start with a value between 1000-5000 KB (kilobyte) more than is currently listed in the Preferred Size box.
