Mobile Information Server Does Not Start and Event ID 84 Occurs (294460)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server

This article was previously published under Q294460

SYMPTOMS

Mobile Information Server services may not start, and the following event ID message may be logged in the Application event log:

Event ID: 84
Source: DmiFlt
Description:
The Mobile Information Server ISAPI Filter could not bind to the Active Directory Root DSE.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain controller is not available for the Mobile Information Server computer to connect to.

The RootDSE is the portion of Active Directory (which is present on each domain controller) that provides information about the Active Directory forest. Because the Mobile Information Server computer cannot access this information, the services do not start; this information is necessary for Mobile Information Server to function properly.

MORE INFORMATION

For Mobile Information Server services to start successfully, a domain controller in the local Active Directory domain must be available. Most often, the issue described in the "Summary" section of this article is related to a DNS issue, or it occurs because a domain controller is not available on the network.
