Windows CE Version 2.12 Cannot Connect to Security-Enhanced Web Pages (294389)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to access a secure Web site from Windows CE, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to establish secure connection.
Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer may generate either of the following error messages:
The page you are looking for cannot be found.

-or-

Unable to establish secure connection.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the VeriSign certification authority (CA) has changed the hashing algorithm that is used for new Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) server certificates from Message Digest 5 (MD-5) to Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA1). Note that the Microsoft Windows 2000 CA also uses SHA1 by default.

RESOLUTION

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft as Windows CE 2.12 Core OS QFE 16. To resolve this problem immediately, click the following article number for information about obtaining Windows CE Platform Builder and core operating system software updates:
