SYMPTOMS

You cannot move mailboxes from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003. The following errors appear in the application log when you attempt to move a mailbox:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeAdmin
Event Category: Move Mailbox
Event ID: 1008
Description: Unable to move mailbox 'User'. Error: Cannot complete the operation because the object 'Server' does not have the attribute 'msExchResponsibleMTAServer' set or because you do not have permissions to read it.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeAdmin
Event Category: Move Mailbox
Event ID: 9162
Description: Failed to initialize the Move Mailbox command. Error: Cannot complete the operation because the object 'Server' does not have the attribute 'msExchResponsibleMTAServer' set or because you do not have permissions to read it.

CAUSE

Move Mailbox fails because the msExchResponsibleMTAServer attribute was not created during replication between Exchange Server 5.5 and the Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, or both Windows and Exchange 2000 Server. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk. To work around this problem, use ADSI Edit to add the missing values:

  1. If the Windows 2000 Support Tools are not already installed, install them by running Setup.exe from the Support\Tools folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM. For additional information about how to install the Windows 2000 Support Tools, view the Sreadme.doc file in the Support\Tools folder on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows 2000 Support Tools, point to Tools, and then click ADSI Edit.
  3. If you are not running ADSI Edit from a domain controller, follow these steps:
    1. Click ADSI Edit in the left pane, and then click Connect to on the Action menu.
    2. In the Name box, type a name for the connection.
    3. Under Connection Point, in the Naming Context box, click Configuration Container.
    4. Under Computer, in the Select or type a domain or server box, type the name of a domain controller in the domain that you are logged on to.
    5. Click OK.
  4. In the left pane, locate the appropriate Exchange Server 5.5 object by clicking to expand the following nodes

    - Configuration Container
    - CN=Configuration
    - CN=Services
    - CN=Microsoft Exchange
    - CN=Organization Name
    - CN=Administrative Groups
    - CN=Site Name
    - CN=Servers
    - CN=Server Name

  5. Right-click the Server object, and then click Properties. On the Attributes tab, change Select which properties to view to BOTH. Under Select a property to view, select msExchResponsibleMTAServer. Add the correct value for the local message transfer agent (MTA) name. This information will be the same value listed for the HomeMTA attribute on the user mailbox that failed during the move.

    Example: CN=Microsoft MTA,CN=Server Name,CN=Servers,CN=Site Name,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Organization,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=Domain

Note: The above example shows the line wrapped. In ADSI Edit, this is entered as one contiguous value.
