SYMPTOMS

When you search for shapes in Microsoft Visio, some of the shapes may be represented by the generic default green icon instead of by their own respective icons.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you exceed a limit on the amount of system resources used for icons.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Visio.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  4. Locate and select the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Visio\Shapegallery

  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD value, and then name the DWORD value "ImageLimit."
  6. Right-click ImageLimit, and then click Modify. Click Hexadecimal, type 300 for the Value data, and then click OK.
  7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
If your search returns more than 500 shapes, you can increase the number in step 6 until you can see all of the icons.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
