Visio2002: Error Message: Setup Ended Because of an Error (294026)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q294026

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Visio to run from a network location, you may receive the following error message near the end of the Setup process:
Setup ended because of an error.
You may also receive a "Dr. Watson" error or experience an installer roll-back, and then Setup then quits unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  • You attempt to install Visio on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer.

    -and-
  • Visio is installed to run from a network location, and to the root (top) level of a network share.

For example, for a server and share name called \\VisioServer\VisioShare, Visio is installed to the following location:

    \\VisioServer\VisioShare\[Visio Installation]

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, do not install Visio to the root level of a network share. For example, for a server and share name called \\VisioServer\VisioShare, do not install Visio to the following location:

\\VisioServer\VisioShare\[Visio Installation]

Instead, install Visio at least one folder deeper on the share, such as to the following location:

\\VisioServer\VisioShare\VisioFolder\[Visio Installation]

Similarly, when you share out the location of the Visio installation on a server, do not share the Visio installation folder itself. Instead, share the folder at least one level removed in the folder tree. For example, if the Visio installation that you want to share is located at C:\Program Files\Shared Applications\Visio on your server, do not share the "Visio" folder.

Instead, share a folder higher up the folder tree, such as "Shared Applications" or "Program Files."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
