Error Message: Could Not Install or Remove the COM Internet Services Proxy Component (293810)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to remove the COM Internet Services Proxy component, you may receive the following error message:
Could not install or remove the COM Internet Services Proxy component

CAUSE

This error message can occur if the installation of the COM Internet Services Proxy component was not successful when it was first installed as part of an unattended installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Copy the Rpcproxy.dll file from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Dllcache folder to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Rpcproxy folder.
  2. Use Regsvr32.exe to register the Rpcproxy.dll file.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The following problems that can occur during the original installation may cause the error message when you try to uninstall the COM Internet Services Proxy component:
  • The Rpcproxy.dll file is not copied to the the %SystemRoot%\System32\Rpcproxy folder.
  • The Rpcproxy.dll file is not registered in the registry or the metabase.
The uninstallation is successful even though you receive the error message because the Rpcproxy.dll file was not properly installed to begin with.
