The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q293614

SYMPTOMS

If you start Microsoft Paint, and then click File, the Get from Scanner or Camera option may be unavailable even though you have installed and connected a scanner or camera.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the scanner or camera does not support Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). The Get from Scanner or Camera option is a WIA feature.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, contact the manufacturer for the availability of a WIA driver for the device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows XP supports TWAIN imaging devices, but these devices are more limited in functionality than WIA devices. The hardware manufacturer must provide drivers and software for TWAIN devices to preview and capture images. After you transfer the image to the My Computer or My Pictures folder, you can view and manipulate it by using the WIA Picture Tasks and Image Preview tools.
