This article was previously published under Q293452

SYMPTOMS

The Exchange 2000 Migration Wizard that is included with Service Pack 1 (SP1) has been enhanced to include a MAPI migration option. This type of migration is designed to migrate user accounts and mailboxes from an Exchange Server 5.5 organization to a separate Exchange 2000 organization. You can experience limitations when you use this tool.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

The MAPI migration is displayed as the Migrate from Exchange 5.5 option in the Exchange Server Migration Wizard. This version of the Migration Wizard has the following limitations:
  • The Migration Wizard may not successfully move a mailbox between an Exchange Server 5.5 computer and an Exchange 2000 computer in the same Exchange site. The tool accepts the job and does not report error messages; however, nothing happens. If the administrator attempts the procedure again using the same mailbox, Migration Wizard enters in a loop and the tool may fill the source mailbox with many duplicate e-mail messages.
  • The Migration Wizard may not migrate public folders or distribution lists.
  • The Migration Wizard may not migrate permissions to other mailboxes, public folders, or file shares.
For more information about MAPI migration, refer to the Help file shipped with SP1, Exadmin.chm.
