Setup Does Not Work When You Install Exchange 2000 System Manager (293372)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server

This article was previously published under Q293372

SYMPTOMS

When you run Setup for Mobile Information Server on a server that has Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server System Management tools installed, Setup does not work. The Exchange Event Source is automatically selected to be installed, but the installation does not work, and you receive the following error message:
The Exchange Event Source must be installed on an Exchange 2000 server with SP1. To install Exchange 2000 Event Source, rerun setup on a computer with Exchange 2000 and SP1 installed.
If you select the Mobile Information Server component to be installed instead of the Exchange Event Source, Setup does not work, and you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Mobile Information Server cannot be installed on the same machine as Exchange 2000. Install it on another machine.
You receive this error message even if Exchange 2000 is not installed, but the System Management tools are installed.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Mobile Information Server installer cannot tell the difference between the full installation of Exchange 2000 and the System Management tools installation. The metabase structure is hidden by Exchange 2000 Setup, which causes problems with the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) connectors in Mobile Information Server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not install Exchange 2000 System Management tools on any server where you intend to install Mobile Information Server and the Message Processor components.

STATUS
