PRB: WMP 7 Does Not Play an HTTP Stream If It Is Not Connected to the Internet (293300)

SYMPTOMS

Windows Media Player 7 cannot play an HTTP stream on a local host if the network is disconnected. When you use WMP 7 to play a stream such as http://localhost:8080, you receive the following error message:
Unable to access the media. You may not be connected to the network.
This error occurs only if the computer is not connected to the network, that is, if the network is disabled from Control Panel or the network cable is pulled out.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, make sure that the client is connected to the network.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
