Windows Explorer Hangs When Inserting PC Card During Resume (293197)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
This article was previously published under Q293197 SYMPTOMS
If your laptop computer is suspended and you insert a PC Card immediately after resuming the computer, Windows Explorer may stop responding (hang), or you may receive the following error message on a blue screen:
BUG CHECK Error in VIP
This problem occurs if Windows has a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) request in progress when the additional PC Card is inserted.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because Windows does not cancel an outstanding DHCP request when the network adapter Ethernet controller is rebalanced.
Inserting an additional PC Card can initiate a resource rebalance for the PC Card network adapter to ensure that useable interrupt (IRQ), input/output (I/O), and memory settings are assigned. If this rebalance occurs during a DHCP request, the request is not internally canceled, and the DHCP virtual device (VDHCP) generates an error.
If the hotfix that is documented in the "More Information" section of this article is not installed, the error message occurs. If it is installed, the computer hangs.
