OL2002: Outlook Does Not Recognize Address When You Run IM and Add Exchange E-mail Names to Contact List (293074)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q293074

SYMPTOMS

When you add Exchange e-mail names to a contact list on a computer that runs Instant Messaging (IM), Outlook does not recognize the address. This occurs on computers that run Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the IM servers are set up to look at a different address for the Exchange IM state.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do one of the following:
  • Install the Active Directory Client Extensions for the operating system that runs on your computer.
  • Type the actual IM e-mail address in the contact list in MSN Messenger Service, for example user1@im.microsoft.com.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
