SYMPTOMS

When you configure Outlook 2002 offline to use a dial-up network (DUN) connection during a background synchronization, and then you connect by using another DUN connection, one of the following error messages appears when the background synchronization begins:
Modem is unavailable or device is in use.
Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x80070279): 'The port is already in use or is not configured for Dial-Up Networking dial out.'
This behavior occurs while Outlook is set to use the existing dial-up connection.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, before you start Outlook, connect by using the DUN connection that is configured for background synchronization:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Double-click the DUN connection that is configured to work with background synchronization.
