OL2002: Errors Appear if the Exchange Server Connection Is Lost While Outlook Client Is Logged On (292921)

SYMPTOMS

If you try to open your calendar or switch to another mail folder, you may receive the following error message when you try to read a message:
Can't open this item.
You may also recevie the following error message when you try to compose a new message:
The operation failed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Exchange Server services are being restarted while Outlook 2002 is running. Outlook 2002 does not quit, but can have trouble re-establishing a connection to the Exchange Server under certain circumstances, and you may have to exit and log off to restart communication with the Exchange server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, exit and log off of Outlook 2002, restart Outlook 2002, and try again.

You can also go to another folder, in the Folder List or Outlook Bar, and re-enter your log on credentials when you receive the prompt.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
