Component Messages
Review the component messages and errors below before proceeding

Component:
Small Business Server
Administration
Active Directory Configuration
When you click Active Directory Configuration, you may receive the following error message in the bottom window:
The program failed to install properly.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools is installed, but Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services is not installed.

The Active Directory Configuration sub-component improperly determined that Microsoft Exchange Server had been installed (even though the Exchange Management sub-component had been installed), and then the Active Directory Configuration sub-component attempted to create the mailbox for the company distribution list, which made the Active Directory Configuration sub-component unsuccessful in the installation process.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, ignore the error message in the Symptoms section if Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is not needed with the installation. However, if you want to install Exchange 2000 Server to enable Setup to complete:
  • If Exchange is going to be used with Small Business Server during the installation of Small Business Server, install the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) Service, as well as all of the Exchange components.
  • If Exchange is not going to be used with Small Business Server, cancel the selection of the Exchange components, including Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools, during the component selection phase.
To install all of the Exchange components in the current installation:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Small Business Server 2000, and then click Change/Remove to start the installation of Small Business Server.
  2. Locate the Component Selection dialog box. On the Component Selection dialog box, set the Installation mode of Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 to Change.
  3. Set the installation of the sub-component Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services to Install, and then click Accept. You must also install the dependencies for these services, which includes NNTP Service.
  4. Click Next to enable the installation to finish. This step enables Setup to complete, and the mailbox can be created for the company distribution list.
