XADM: The Information Store Does Not Adhere to Anonymous Client Permissions on Newsgroup Folders (292594)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q292594

SYMPTOMS

If you set client permissions on a Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) Newsgroup folder for the anonymous user, the Exchange 2000 information store may not adhere to those permissions.

For example, create a NNTP Newsgroup folder in Exchange System Manager. Open the folder properties, click the Permissions tab, and then click Client Permissions. Click the Anonymous user, and then click to select only the Read Items and Folder Visible rights check boxes. If you use an NNTP client (such as Microsoft Outlook Express) to connect anonymously to the Exchange 2000 server and subscribe to this folder, the NNTP client can successfully post items to this NNTP folder anonymously, even though the NNTP client does not have the right to do so.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because in Exchange 2000, Microsoft Windows 2000 controls the NNTP service (in Exchange Server 5.5, the information store controls the NNTP service). Therefore, event synchronization needs to occur between the information store object in Exchange 2000 and the NNTP service in Windows 2000 for permission changes to take affect. This event synchronization functionality is not present in the Exchange 2000 information store or the Windows 2000 NNTP service.
