Autodetection Does Not Work for Chinese and Korean Versions of Browsers (292545)

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer Running on Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Korean versions may not be able to use the Wpad.dat file that is sent by ISA. The default Wpad.dat file can contain the following line:

var Chars =" !\"#$% ... ";

Because on Chinese and Korean (CHT/CHS/KOR) computers, the following characters are interpreted as a single DBCS character, and not as a quotation mark; the line no longer has a close quote:

The script essentially has a syntax error, and no proxy information is set. This causes Internet Explorer to fail to retrieve the Ident.cab file, and results in GetSelfUpdateDirectory not working.

CAUSE

International DBCS languages convert the script from ANSI to DBCS and it interprets characters according to the Lead Byte, Trail Byte conventions. There is a quoted string and the character immediately before the ending quote is a lead byte. Because of this, the ending quote becomes a trail byte, and accordingly, no ending quote is found. AutoDetect then interprets that the script is invalid, and does not work for both Internet Explorer and Wininet for these computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for ISA Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in ISA Server 2000 SP1.
