XADM: Online Defragmentation Loops Continuously When the Database Is Corrupted (292305)

An incorrect page link in the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database may cause online defragmentation to loop continuously.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the latching logic for merges processes an incorrect page link as a transient error (errBTMergeNotSynchronous). An incorrect page link is caused by a split or merge operation on an adjacent page.
RESOLUTIONA supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix. After you apply this fix, the split or merge logic in the ESE searches for incorrect page links in any of the pages that are involved in the split or merge operation; if the ESE finds an incorrect page link, the ESE errors out instead of looping continuously.
