BUG: Unable to Connect to Analysis Services 2000 When OfficeXP is Installed (292295)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services
This article was previously published under Q292295 SYMPTOMS
If Analysis Services is installed on a system after Microsoft OfficeXP has been installed, OLAP based Pivot Tables in ExcelXP are longer able to communicate with Analysis Services. When you attempt to refresh an existing Pivot Table the following error message occurs in ExcelXP:
Initialization of the data source failed.
Check the database server or contact your database
administrator. Make sure the external database is available, and
then try the operation again. If you see this message again,
create a new data source to connect to the database.
When you try to build a new Pivot Table or to connect to the Analysis Services server from the MDX sample application, the following error message occurs:
Unable to open connection.
Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed.
CAUSE
When Microsoft OfficeXP is installed it installs version 8.00.195 of the Msolap80.dll file. Analysis Services overwrites the 8.00.195 DLL version with version 8.00.194.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, run the OfficeXP or OfficeXP Web Components installation with the detect and repair error option.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services version 8.0.
