Restored Files Show Wrong Backup Set Time and File Last Modify Time (292258)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q292258

SYMPTOMS

When you restore a file from a backup set that you created on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to your Windows 98- or Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, the time stamp on the backup set may be incorrect. After you restore the file, and then view the properties of that file, the Created time and Modified time may also be incorrect.

For example, if you set your computer to use the "(GMT-8) Pacific ime (US/Canada); Tijuana" time zone, the backup set time stamp, Created time, and Modified time in the files properties may be eight hours later than the original backup time.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Windows 95 Backup uses Greenwich mean time for backup sets and Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition uses the time on your computer.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
